Video: Michigan Filmmaker Snags an Academy Award and Gives Shoutout to His Hometown

Filmmaker Sam A. Davis won an Academy Award Sunday night for Best Live Action Short Film for his movie, “The Singers,” and gave a shoutout to his hometown of Potterville, southwest of Lansing, during his acceptance speech.

“First, I want to thank my parents, who convinced a kid from Potterville, Michigan, that this was a viable career avenue. Thank you, Mom and Dad.”

In what seemed like a particularly unusual situation, Davis tied in the category, sharing the Oscar with the film “Two People Exchanging Saliva.”

“I didn't know that was a thing — to tie. But we're happy to be up here,” he said during his speech.
