The Michigan State Spartans football team has looked pretty lame this year under Coach Jonathan Smith.

That was certainly true under the watchful eye of the nation on Saturday night in the 31-20 loss against their big rival, the University of Michigan. The offense at times looked totally inept and lost.

Detroit Free Press columnist Shawn Windsor thinks Smith's days as the Spartans’ coach could be coming to an end, writing that fans expect “more than what they saw Saturday, Oct. 25, at Spartan Stadium — in form and function, anyway.”

“Losing is one thing. Self-inflicted penalties, nonsensical play calls, and a consistent lack of execution are another.”

The only reason the Spartans didn’t get beaten worse than they did was because the Wolverines looked a little shaky at times.

Windsor concludes:

"Beat Nebraska last month, instead of fumbling around on special teams, and the loss to the Wolverines doesn’t matter as much. Handle UCLA two weeks ago instead of slopping around – on both sides – and a third season feels inevitable".

"Instead? The only inevitable feeling now is the end of the Jonathan Smith era."
